Deadlines are amazing things. I’ve done this before….four hours before I’m supposed to leave for the airport and I have yet to clean my house or pack my bag. Suddenly, the pressure is on, I’m super focused and the pressure drives me to accomplish tasks that would have taken me the whole day to finish if there pressure wasn’t there. Having a sense of urgency can do amazing things.
As a kid, I always knew that life would end you know but I acted like I would live forever. My level of appreciation for life was pretty low. I know that whenever I feel that something is going to last forever I have less will power to make the most of it. Because I get the feeling that it will always be there so no need to rush anything right?
But the reality is that ….YOLO. You Only Life Once. This is it. This is time, this day, this moment, will never come again
Having this realization and reminding myself of this everyday has dramatically transformed the way I live my life. Realizing that I will only life once was one of the most gifts that I could have ever given myself.
I first came to this realization after coming across the following Steve Jobs quote:
I love this quote because it is a great reminder of YOLO. This philosophy has enabled me to have some of the greatest cultural encounters and has given me the courage to try to new experiences. Remembering YOLO has given me the courage to be curious about the world I live in by meeting people with so many diverse stories, try new foods, listen to different types of music, and be open to new perspectives. It has given me the courage to LAUGH with everything I’ve got as well….having a sense of urgency makes you want to feel, be, and experience all you can. Time is ticking right, tick tock? And none of us are immune from it.
AND I LOVE, LOVE Ted Talks! This video is one of my favorites. Ric Elias had a front-row seat on Flight 1549, the plane that crash-landed in the Hudson River in New York in January 2009. This video is his story about what when through his mind as the plane went down. His story is a beautiful reminder of YOLO.
You only live once so it is important to fill our lives with positive energy, take care of the people that matter to us, and make an impact on whatever way we can wherever we are.
YOLO. YOLO. YOLO. You only live once so let us make the most of one of the greatest gifts that we have been given: LIFE. Let us celebrate our lives by experiencing diversity. Having cultural encounters and truly experiencing the world we live. Party on. Party On. Let the celebration of diversity Rock ON!
